Our Story

Built from Pain.
Driven by Purpose.

Shield of Hope was not built out of comfort. It was built out of pain, perseverance, faith, and the kind of life experiences that change you forever.

A Message from Our Founder

From Chris Wooters,
President of Shield of Hope

I'm Chris Wooters, and long before Shield of Hope ever became a nonprofit, it was already growing in my heart through years of hardship, love, service, and learning what it really means to keep moving forward when life does not go the way you planned.

My family has walked through seasons that have tested us in every possible way. We have faced medical battles, uncertainty, grief, exhaustion, financial pressure, and moments where the future felt completely unknown. We have lived through the kind of days where you are trying to stay strong for everyone else while also wondering how you are going to take the next step yourself.

We know what it feels like when life changes in an instant. We know what it feels like to need help, to need hope, and to need people who do more than just say they care. We know what it means when people truly show up.

The Heart Behind It All

Walking Beside Sam

A big part of what shaped me was walking beside my son Sam through Duchenne muscular dystrophy and all of the battles that came with it. When you watch someone you love face challenge after challenge, it changes the way you see the world.

It teaches you that strength is not always loud. It teaches you that courage is often found in the smallest moments. It teaches you to appreciate every second, because tomorrow is never promised the way we often assume it is. And it teaches you that too many families are carrying burdens they were never meant to carry alone.

What I have lived through pushed me to keep fighting, to cherish each day more deeply, and to use our journey to help others who are facing struggles of their own.

Sam faced his battles with a smile that could light up any room — even on the hardest days, even in the middle of treatments and hospital stays that would break most people. His spirit was a constant reminder that joy and struggle can exist in the same moment.

But this story is not only about what we have been through. It is also about what those experiences have built in me and in our family.

  • They built empathy that comes from living through hard things.
  • They built a deeper determination to make sure other families do not have to face life-altering moments without support, dignity, and hope.
A Moment of Pure Joy

Sam & His Mom Liz

In the middle of everything — the appointments, the treatments, the hard days — there were also moments like this one. Sam had a gift for laughter, for mischief, and for filling a room with joy that was completely his own.

This is the Sam we carry with us. This is the spirit that drives everything Shield of Hope does.

Why We Exist
"Shield of Hope was created to turn hardship into help."

We are here to support families and individuals facing life-altering challenges through practical care, encouragement, connection, and action. Real hope is not just something you talk about. Real hope shows up. Real hope helps. Real hope stands beside people in the middle of their hardest season and reminds them that they are not forgotten.

Our journey has taught us that some of the strongest people in the world are fighting battles no one else can see. Families in crisis do not just need kind words. They need resources. They need community. They need people willing to stand in the gap. They need to be reminded that even in the middle of fear, loss, and uncertainty, they still matter and they are still seen.

Our Promise

Pain is not the end
of the story.
It becomes purpose.

Shield of Hope is more than a nonprofit to me. It is a mission. It is a promise that what we have walked through will not be wasted. It is a commitment to build something that lifts others up — especially families facing medical hardship, disability-related needs, unexpected crisis, and the overwhelming weight that comes when life changes overnight.

We are building Shield of Hope to be a place where compassion meets action. A place where service is personal. A place where people are empowered, not pitied. A place where families can find support, community, and real hope when they need it most.

Our story has shaped us. Our faith has carried us. Our hardships have refined us. And our future is clear: we are here to help others stand strong when life tries to knock them down.

This is the beginning of how we help someone else write a better one."
